Preservation Management Plan
One of our first major goals in establishing ARBPA is to develop a professional Preservation Management Plan. This plan will provide us with information on the current status of the various structural and natural features of the scenic roadway, identify significant issues, and prioritize our future work. We hope to begin the Preservation Management Plan in 2024.
Awarded a $20,000 Keystone Planning Grant
To help us move forward in this goal, we have applied for and been awarded a $20,000 Keystone Planning Grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). The Keystone Grant requires a 1-to-1 cash match, which means we will also need to raise matching funds of $20,000. Donations are always welcome!
Turnout #2 Fountain Revitalized
Brought back the fountain feature at Turnout #2 (between Sandy Creek and Nadine) by reconnecting the intermittent hillside drainage to flow out of the front of the stone wall.
Turnout #2 Vegetation Clearing
Begun cleaning out overgrown vegetation at the sides of Turnout #2, where we hope to do plantings in the Fall of 2024.
Riverside Turnout #2 Adoption Area
Adopted a 200 ft length of PennDOT right-of-way edge across from Turnout #2 (on the riverside of the roadway) through PennDOT’s Adopt & Beautify program, where we have started to cut out the invasive vines and shrubs (the area is loaded with invasive privet and bittersweet).
Turnout #3 Vegetation Clearing
Started cleaning up the overgrown vegetation on Turnout #3 (between Sandy Creek and Verona), where we also hope to do plantings in Fall 2024.
ARB Litter Cleanups
Joined with several litter cleanups along ARB, including the Pittsburgh Major Taylor Cycle Club, the Pittsburgh Christadelphian Church, and a litter cleanup on Earth Day 2023 with Allegheny Cleanways.
ARB Scenic Byway
Begun working with Scenic Pittsburgh to get ARB designated as a Pennsylvania Scenic Byway, with the support of Pittsburgh, Penn Hills, Verona and Oakmont local governments.
Community Outreach Startup
Initiated outreach and discussions with organizations and individuals who can advise and assist us in other future efforts, including formation of a volunteer Advisory Committee.
